Global Ministries

The Global Ministries program of the Northwest Region and the Pacific Northwest Conference is a reflection of our work to engage as a region in support of intentional acts of justice and mercy to those in need globally. Currently, we share in ministry with eight Global Mission Partners, missionaries engaged around the world who regularly share with us the experiences they are having and the ways in which we can support efforts to raise up those in need. Global Mission Partners are assigned with the national Global Ministries program, a common witness of the Division of Overseas Ministries, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Wider Church Ministries, United Church of Christ.

Global Ministries Missionary Partners

Erik and Kim Free

Erik and Kim Free are members of Portland First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Portland, Oregon, and started serving with the United Church of Christ in Mozambique (UCCM) in 2014. Meeting a critical presence request by the United Church of Christ in Mozambique, Erik will train youth and elders in the community in agricultural skills and will also serve as a local church pastor as needed by the UCCM. Kim will train the church community on health care and preventative medical care. Kim will also work with women and girls on empowerment projects.

Missionary couple has to leave Mozambique
Kim and Erik Free, our Oregon missionary couple serving in with the United Church of Christ in Mozambique have been brought back to the United States early for their safety.  They are from the Oregon Region and have served since April 2013.
“Mozambique is dealing with an insurgent political force causing insecurity in the central provinces of the country where they were working,” said Ruth Brandon of the PNC/DOC Global Ministries Committee and former missionary to Mozambique.  Erik, a pastoral minister, and Kim, a registered nurse were working with the UCC of Mozambique on rural development such as rebuilding churches, establishing health clinics and promoting agriculture.

The month of February 2017 has been requested for their itineration in the Region.  Ruth Brandon and Janet Larson are scheduling their visit.

Global Ministries Partnership with the PROK in South Korea

Since 1993 the Pacific NW Conference of the United Church of Christ has had a partnership with the East Seoul Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of the Republic of Korea.  Disciples have participated in visits to Korea and have entertained clergy and laypersons who have come to the northwest.  The partnership began with the awareness that the UCC and the PROK shared common priorities and commitments of a liberal theology, progressive governance and a commitment to social justice.  The Northwest Region of the Christian Church joined the Global Ministries Committee in 2005 and the Disciple Regional Assembly affirmed the partnership.  The 2016 Peace Pilgrimage to Korea is represented in this video,
