Commission on Ministry

The clergy and lay people who volunteer their time in service of the Commission on Ministry in the Northwest Region commit to meet several times each year to conduct the business of creating and maintaining processes designed to ordain, license and then safeguard and care for the careers of ministers.

Among the many tasks the COM has before it at any meeting, they will:

  • Meet with Seminary Students who wish to come under care as they prepare to reach for ordination
  • Evaluate the credentials of ministers who are requesting standing with the Northwest Region
  • Meet with ministers and future ministers in process
  • Consider matters of alleged misconduct
  • Communicate progress with candidate

These are just some of their given tasks. If you would like information on becoming a Minister in the Northwest Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), please contact us.

Meet our Seminarians!

Did you know that the Northwest Regional Christian Church currently has connections with seven seminarians in Chicago, Fort Worth, and Seattle?  As school begins this fall we ask that you would keep these students in your own prayers and within the prayers of your congregation. We give thanks for these students, for their passion and their commitment to serve the church.  Guiding them through an in-care process during the years of their study is a privilege and an honor for us.  We thank Laurie Rudel, the denominational representative and liturgical coordinator for Disciple students at the Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry for collecting the bios and photos of these students.

Kara Markell

Kara Markell (Queen Anne Christian Church, Seattle): After working many years as a Music Educator I began to feel a call to ministry in 2004.  I spent that summer serving as a DHM intern at the Yakama Christian Mission in White Swan.  It was there that my call became clear and I enrolled at Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry (STM) in the fall of 2005.  I began my studies at STM in the Spiritual Direction program, but moved into the Masters of Divinity program in my second year there.  I transferred to Brite Divinity School in the fall of 2008 in order to be closer to my family and have enjoyed this new environment.  I currently serve Alliance United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, Texas as their Director of Music Ministries.  I look forward to graduating this coming May and the possibilities for ministry that lie ahead.

Laura Jennison Reed

Laura Jennison Reed (North Hill Christian Church, Spokane): I am entering my first year at the Divinity School at the University of Chicago. During the last few years my involvement in the regional transformation process and as a teacher of the adult Sunday School class at North Hill I have discovered a love of teaching and an even deeper love of all the possibilities that everyone brings to the table when we talk about the future of church and I hope to be able to further that in my studies.

Mary Closson
Mary Closson (Queen Anne Christian, Seattle) - Originally from Dyersburg, TN, I graduated in 1999 from Milligan College in Johnson City, TN with a bachelor's  degree in communication, journalism and political science. I am currently a fourth year student at Mars Hill Graduate School, Seattle pursuing a master of divinity degree. Being in a church community from a very young age, I have witnessed and participated in the grace and possibility of the church. I have a love for the local church and its continual growth in the pursuit of understanding and celebrating God. My own desire to continue to search out the mind of God has led me to seminary at Mars Hill Graduate School. QACC has allowed me to participate and observe a gracious and thoughtful church community attempting to live into its culture, by connecting soul and text.
M. L. Daniel
M.L. Daniel (Findlay Street Christian Church, Seattle): I bring a simple philosophy to my life’s work—that all people are social engineers for change.  It is this philosophy that drives my law practice representing individuals that have suffered unfair or adverse employment practices and that fuel my ministry. I am in my third year at Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry pursing a master of divinity degree. I look forward to being able to use this degree to be able to expand the justice work that I am already engaged and to help faith community begin to view themselves differently in the 21st century.

Ruth Jewell

Ruth Jewell (Edmonds Christian Church, Edmonds): I am beginning my third year at Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry in the Masters of Divinity degree program. Since retiring from professional life I volunteer with in my faith community of Edmonds Christian Church where I have discovered a love of prayerful silence and worship. It is with great hope that I will be able to pass on the gift of contemplation to others.

Sharon Nichols

Sharon Nichols (All Pilgrims Christian Church, Seattle): I transferred in to Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry in September of 2008 from part-time attendance at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington DC since 2004. In February 2008 I retired from 31 years as a computer programmer and analyst civilian for the US Air Force. Singing in the All Pilgrims' choir is such a joy and inspiration for me and I love the open and affirming spirit that I witness there. Currently I discern my call to be as a Chaplain for hospitals, hospice, or elder care homes.

Justin Umbright

Justin Umbright (All Pilgrims Christian Church, Seattle): My most recent work experience has been in business as a financial analyst at Boeing, however I now plan to immerse myself in full time ministry and study at Seattle University.  A major contributor leading me to ministry has been the people and their stories at my church and community. I currently serve as a member of the Transition Team of the Regional Church which will seek ways to live into our new five year mission plan.
